Donald H. Hilgenbrinck

Donald H. “Don” Hilgenbrinck, 87, of Quincy, IL passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Home of Quincy on Thursday, August 13, 2015. He was born in Quincy on April 14, 1928. He was the son of Herman “Bud” and Marie (Maas) Hilgenbrinck. He married the late Eleanor Peters on August 11, 1956 in Quincy’s St. Peter Catholic Church, she preceded him in death on November 21, 2012.
Don attended Fairview Grade School in the Ursa bottoms, Ursa High School until 1945, and then graduated from Mendon Township High School in 1946. He treasured his many childhood memories of growing up in the Ursa bottoms. He enjoyed hunting as a youth. His career and passion was farming, second only to the Lord and his family. After retiring from farming, he enjoyed assisting with the lawn care at St. Peter Church. His favorite activities included playing dominos, traveling and dancing. He will always be remembered for his smile and loving nature.
Don was an active member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon for many years. He was a member of the St. Edward’s Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club of Mendon and he participated in Quincy Cursillo.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Emy Hilgenbrinck of Quincy; grandchildren, Luke Hilgenbrinck and his wife Jessica Moyers Hilgenbrinck of Jackson, MO; Jessica Hilgenbrinck of Milwaukee, WI; and Chad Hilgenbrinck and his friend Reilly Maloney of St. Joseph, MO; great-grandchild Dylan Monahan of Jackson, MO; brother William “Bill” Hilgenbrinck and his wife Janet of Lima, IL; a sister Geraldine Foust of Palmyra, MO; sisters-in-law, Joyce Peters, Ruth “Ruthie” Peters Cole, Ruth Peters, Mary Hilgenbrinck; and brother-in-law Lester Peters. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. He had many special friends including Joe and Marilyn Meyer of Quincy and the residents and staff of Good Samaritan Home.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a sister Marilyn Starman; a brother Robert “Bob” Hilgenbrinck; brothers-in-law, John “Johnny” Starman, Earl Foust, Lewis Peters, John “Jack” Peters, George Wayne Cole and William “Bill” Peters; sisters-in-law Garnette Peters and Betty Peters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church with a special friend of the family, Fr. Tom Meyer, celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Home, Quincy, IL.

    Don was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life, farming, family and friends, feeding the ducks and helping others. He love his family, especially his grandchildren . I could go to talk to him for twenty minutes and end up there for two hours. I’m honored to have known him.
