Donald Arthur Brown age 82, of 433 Spring Lake Drive Quincy died on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 7:06 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. He was born February 16, 1935 in Quincy, a son of George W. and Zelma (Turner) Brown. He married the love of his life, Judy A. Milbert on July 13, 1953 in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and she survives. The couple met at the age of 17, were married at age 18, and had celebrated their 64th Anniversary.

His family business, Brown Electric Construction Company began in 1918 when Arthur W. Brown, Don’s grandfather, began working as an electrician for Schmitt Electric at 7th and Maine Streets in Quincy, Illinois. In 1928, George Brown, Arthur’s son, entered the electrical trade. The following year, Arthur and Albert Dickhut purchased the business from Frank Schmitt and continued operations as Schmitt Electric, moving the business to 830 Maine. In 1943, Brown and Dickhut dissolved their partnership. Two years later George Brown joined his father in partnership as A.W. Brown and Son.

From 1945 until Arthur’s retirement in 1951, father and son operated the company from 2425 Cedar Street in Quincy. George continued building the business at 427 South 10th Street, welcoming his son Donald into the trade in 1953. A growing demand for service and reputation for quality work enabled the company to move in 1962 to the current office location, 1039 Hampshire Street. George and Donald, second and third generation electricians and contractors, incorporated in 1968 as Brown Electric Construction Company. George Brown retired in 1977 and Donald became president and owner until selling the company in 2000. Don also owned United Systems for several years from 1986-2003.

Don was a graduate of Quincy High School. He was a member of St. John’s Anglican (Episcopal) Church.

He had served as Governor of the National Electrical Contractors Association and served on various committees for many years; he was a member of the Bodley Lodge, Quincy Shrine Club and Quincy Consistory, A.A.S.R. of the Masonic Temple Quincy for 33 years. Don was a member of the Elks Lodge, and Spring Lake Country Club, where he was a long-term board member. Don was a member and had served as President of the Quincy Boat Club.

He and Judy traveled the world together and lived life to the fullest. They had a home in Florida and were members of the Palmetto Pines Country Club there, they also had many fun times at their home in the Lake of Ozarks.

Survivors include his wife Judith; two daughters, Sandy Brown Winter and her husband Dale; Cynthia Z. Melton and her dear friend (and Don’s as well) Karl E. Sutton all of Quincy. Three Granddaughters, Bailey Melton of Seattle, WA; Regan Melton and McKenna Melton both of St. Louis, MO; a brother, James Brown and his wife Jane of Boston, MA also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his mother and father in-law.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by Fr. Waylon Lawrence. Entombment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.
