To the family of Donald A. Bickhaus:
Meaningful memories flood my mind today as I reflect on the life of a true friend and wonderful teammate. I was the beneficiary of Don’s kindness as he helped me get acquainted with new surroundings when I moved to Quincy High School. I feel a special bond as we were basketball teammates at QHS in 1945 and at Quincy University for four years until 1950. It was my honor to present Don when he became a Quincy University Hall of Fame member.
We signed up for the Navy Reserves together before we finished high school. I considered Don one of great all-around Quincy athletes of the past century. While he is noted for tennis and basketball, he could have played any sport well.
I treasure the fact that our high school team, led by Don, including El and Mel Tappe, Auris McGee and myself, continued together at Quincy U. Furthermore, we all still lived in Quincy throughout our lives.
My wife, Fern, and I send our heartfelt condolences to the loving family of Don Bickhaus.
We are thankful that we were friends of your wonderful father and mother.
With God’s Blessings, Richard & Fern Heitholt

Please accept my sympathy on the passing of your Father. I worked with Cathy at the State’s Attorney’s Office and just learned of his passing. We are all thankful for his service in WW2 and his work for the Quincy community.
