Dennis Wayne Peter

Dennis Wayne Peter, age 83, of 6802 Columbus Rd, Quincy, died on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on August 10, 1932 in Quincy, a son of Andrew & Leona (Wand) Peter. He married Mary Lu Emerick on May 11, 1957 in St. Francis Catholic Church. She survives.

Dennis served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Upon returning from the service in 1956, he began working for the United States Postal Service. He continued there until his retirement in September of 1989.

Mr. Peter was a former member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and currently belonged to St. Francis Church.

He was a member of the Letter Carriers Union, the Catholic War Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the U.S. LST Association and the LST #325 Memorial. He went on the Great River Honor Flight #22 in 2013.

Dennis served on the Board of Directors for Quincy Park Band and was a Trustee for Ellington Township. He was a Cardinal baseball fan and a fan of the Green Bay Packers.

In addition to his wife Mary Lu, he is survived by his sons, Greg Peter and his wife Karen of Quincy, and Bill Peter and his wife Lee of Goldsboro, NC; brothers, Charles (Jane) Peter of Jacksonville, IL, Dale (Faye) Peter of Zionsville, IN and Mike “George” (Deb) Peter of Kansas City, MO; and a sister, Arlene Brocksmith of Peoria, IL; a sister-in-law, Sharlene Peter of Sun City, FL;five grandchildren, Todd Peter of Troy, IL, Cody (Ginny) Peter of Millstadt, IL, Adam Peter and his fiance’ Emily Walton of St. Charles, MO, Garrett Peter & Clason Peter, both of Goldsboro, NC; twin great-grandsons, Cole & Drew Peter of Millstadt, IL

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Diane Russell, one brother Ron Peter and a brother-in-law, Jerry Brocksmith.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Great River Honor Flight, the Knight of Columbus TV Mass for the Shut-Ins or to St. Francis Grade School.
