David Sanders
David Sanders age 91, of Quincy died on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 10:10 p.m. in the Illinois Veteran’s Home. David was born March 8, 1926 in Makanda, IL a son of David Riley & Kate (Day) Sanders, Sr. He married Doris E. Bissey on March 6, 1953 in Lawrenceville, IL and she survives.
Mr. Sanders taught Biology, Microbiology, and Zoology at Quincy Senior High School for 33 years. He retired in 1985. He received his B.S. in Botany from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and his Masters in Science from Ohio State University.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1944-1946 and was present onboard the USS Missouri at the signing of the Peace Treaty with Japan.
Mr. Sanders was beloved by his students, and he loved teaching the sciences. He had been a Boy Scout leader and youth baseball coach. His hobbies included being an avid golfer and master gardener.
In addition to his wife Doris, survivors also include his children, Kent (Cindy) Sanders of Cincinnati, OH; Brian Sanders of Hilliard, OH and Bill (Susan) Sanders of Quincy. His grandchildren: Cristina Sanders; David (Maribel) Sanders; Hannah and Danielle Sanders. Two Great-Grandchildren, Riley and Lucas Sanders. A sister, Betty Waller of Baton Rouge, LA and many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his eight brothers and sisters.
A memorial graveside service will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy. Military Honors will be conducted graveside. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to: Gem City Kiwanis Club of Quincy Foundation.

Please accept our condolences on the passing of Dave. It was an honor to teach with Dave and we always enjoyed visiting when we crossed paths at HyVee. Doris, you and Dave were obviously great parents as attested to by your kids and grandkids.
We regret not being present at Dave’s services since we are visiting our daughter in New Hampshire.

Dear Sander’s family,
So sorry to hear of Mr. Sander’s death. Both Curt and I (as well as my mother Marilyn Weisenborn) had him as our biology teacher. He was a great teacher; fun, knowledgeable, and ready to share his wisdom with a friendly smile. He will me missed.

David Sanders was one of my favorite teachers. I think I was in one of his first or almost first years of teaching Science. I was in his class at QHS 1952-53. I really enjoyed that class. God bless to the family and friends.
Dave is one of my favorite teacher. He made the class fun and maybe why I ended in the science field for a career
Kent and all the Sanders family, I’m so sorry for the loss of your wonderful father. I was privileged to be in his Biology class at QHS, and actually enjoyed taking a science class because he made it so much fun! I’m just one among many who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. I hope you all get through this difficult time by focusing on the memories you have of a truly kind and caring man.

Dear Sanders Family, I was so saddened to read of Mr. Sanders death. He was an awesome biology teacher and on a more personal level, a very involved 4-H parent. Wonderful memories of him at QHS and with the Quincy Highlanders. May your memories help you through this time. My thoughts are with you.
So sad to hear. Mr. Sanders was an excellent teacher. I and my brothers had him for Biology in high school in the 1970’s. Brian was in my class. Prayers for your family are being sent your way.
Mr Saunders was a superb biology teacher. He influenced me a great deal. I did not he was on the Missouri at the end of WW2. He had a good life.

When we think of a great teacher we think of Mr. Sanders. Biology offered us more than mere words on paper it taught us many facets of life. We encouraged many others to take the courses that he taught, not only for the knowledge, but because he was the instructor.

I had Mr. Sanders for biology as a sophomore. I thought I wasn’t a “science student.” He convinced me I was as good at it as anyone else (though my lab partner did most of the dissecting).
In my teaching career I often thought of his expertise at handling students who thought RAINthey didn’t measure up (in Latin). He was the epitome of what QHS stood for.
