Chellis Wayne (Chuck) Walker
Chellis Wayne (Chuck) Walker passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 12:51 p.m. in Springfield, MO. Chuck was born on December 14, 1934, in Keokuk, IA to Everett and Alleyne (Earls) Walker.
He grew up in Hamilton, IL and moved to Liberty, IL when he was 15 years old in 1949. He played basketball for Liberty High School and graduated in 1952. He married Esther Fecht on May 24,1955.
They lived in Quincy, IL until they purchased property near Liberty, IL and built a basement home and garage in 1957. The house was built over the basement in 1961 and they lived there until 2005.
Chuck worked his entire life as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. He raised black angus cattle and was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.
Chuck joined the Liberty Christian Church in 1949. Chuck and Esther were active members of the church and Chuck served as a Deacon for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Liberty. Chuck and Esther were active with the Canasta Club and went to dinner and played cards every month. They were members of the Silver Dollar Square Dance Club and went dancing almost every Friday night.
They enjoyed going to many Night Owls (all night dances) both in Quincy and in surrounding states. They enjoyed camping as a family, first in a popup camper, a travel trailer and later in 5th wheel RV’s. The Walkers were members of the Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer Club for many years. They took a trip to Hawaii in 1973. After Chuck retired in 1995, they traveled throughout the US in their 5th wheel and took a cruise to Alaska in 2005 to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They spent many winters in southern Texas in their RV and later in a park model. They resumed square dancing while they were there.
In 2005, they sold the farm and moved to Quincy where they lived in a condo that was larger than their original home. They joined Madison Park Christian Church in 2005.
Chuck was a member of the High Twelve Club. Chuck always enjoyed trading cars and in 2018 he purchased his “last new car” as he had told Esther he was going to do many times over. He rarely kept cars once the warranty was expired. On January 1, 2022, Chuck moved to an assisted living home in Springfield, MO to be closer to Cindy and Steve.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Steve) Lubbert of Strafford, MO and his son, Dave (Judy) Walker of St. Germaine, WI. A grandson, James Lubbert, Jennifer McGuinness and Alex of Brighton, MI; granddaughters, Emily (Moises) Carmona, Alex and Santi of Little Elm, TX; Janelle (Ross) Grunwald, Calvin, Walker and Anna Rose of Cambridge, WI. Cousin, Jim Wilson, Bret, Bart and Tory of Pawnee, IL. Sister-in-law: Murlene (Fecht, Hinrichs) Clayberg of Asbury, IA; nephew, Mark (Stacie) Hinrichs of Asbury, IA. A longtime family friend Donna Drake of Quincy, IL; and friend Mary Harre of Quincy, IL.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Alleyne Walker, his wife, Esther Walker; a brother Willard Walker; a sister Phyllis Walker; sister-in-law, Ruth Walker; brothers-in law, Jack Hinrichs and Danny Clayberg and a nephew Michael Hinrichs.
Chuck was a faithful and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, interment will follow in Quincy Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday morning from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh. Memorials are suggested to Liberty Christian Church or Madison Park Christian Church.
