Carrie Davis Gates

Carrie Davis Gates, age 86, of 301 North 8th, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 3:20 AM in her home. She was born on March 31, 1929 in Atmore, Alabama, the daughter of Sam & Allie (McIntosh) Davis. At an early age, she confessed hope in Christ at the Gaines Chapel A.M.E. Church in Atmore, Alabama. She married Floyd Gates, who preceded her in death. To heir union, one son was born.

Carrie received education at Escambia County training School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education for Alabama A & M College. She received her Master’s Degree from Alabama State. Carrie also did further study at Miles College in Birmingham, AL and Tuskegee Institute. Carrie was employed at Rehobeth High School in Fairfax, Alabama. Then later at Woodward Junior High School, Birmingham, AL; Oak Grove High School and Gardendale Elementary.

Carrie was a member of the Alabama Education Association, the National Association of Education, the Gamma Phil Delta Sororiety. She was on the Stewardess Board and the Trustee Board of the Lioness Club of Payson.

She is survived by:
ONE SON: Darrell G. Gates and his wife Susan of Payson, IL;
THREE GRANDDAUGHTERS: Nicole Huber and her husband Justin; Dominique Sunde and her husband Keith and Kimberly Gates. FIVE GREAT GRANDCHILDREN: Kyla Frizzell; Taten Huber, Elliana Sunde, Keegan Sunde and Ashton Sunde.
ONE SISTER: Alma Henderson along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives also survive.

Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, and all of her siblings.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Interment will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 in Birmingham Alabama at the Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12:30 until the time of the services. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
