Carol Sue Dietrich
Carol Sue Dietrich age 68, of Quincy died Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO. Carol was born in Galesburg, IL on January 14, 1956, a daughter of William and Katherine (Hoffman) Berry. She married Brad W. Dietrich on April 11, 2006, and he survives.
Carol had worked in Electronics, and at well-known local companies, Motorola, Broadcast Electronics and Glenayre. Until her retirement, she had worked at Good Samaritan Home.
Carol had a very tough year, but she never got down and she never quit fighting to get better. Her two favorite prayers were the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23. It was her strong belief and faith that Jesus was with her that kept her going. Even when her doctors told her she only had a few days left, she did not let it get her down. She always gave comfort to her family instead of wanting comfort.
One of her greatest joys in her final days was when the priest at the hospital came up to pray with her and she asked him to baptize her-which he was happy to do. He baptized her and she received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the first time. This brought her great happiness, and she was very proud to join the catholic faith. She was in the hospital for a while, and the nurses came to love her because of her sweetness and kindness. They knew she only had a few days left, so they all got together and bought her and her husband Brad a steak dinner from Texas Roadhouse, one of her favorite restaurants.
Carol’s world revolved around her grandkids. She especially loved it when they would spend the weekend with her. Carol just had a way with kids, they were instantly drawn to her, and they loved her. She was a grandma to many kids, not just her own.
Carol was a real city slicker, but when Brad moved her out to the farm, it didn’t take her long to turn into a farm girl. She loved feeding the cows and watching the little calves run out in the fields. She would jump on the John Deere lawn mower and mow around the farm for hours. She loved riding around on the four-wheeler too, especially with her grandchildren. Carol was a sports fan, she loved watching games on TV especially her favorite team, the KC Chiefs. She liked NASCAR, drag racing doing puzzles, and playing video games with the boys. She enjoyed her coffee and watching SpongeBob.
In addition to her husband Brad, survivors include her two daughters, Susan Riggs (Mike Vogel); and Leeann Riggs all of Quincy; Three grandchildren, Tyler Maggart (Raven Sickman), Cody Crabtree both of Quincy and Lexie Riggs (Cody Smith) of Alton, IL. A great grandson Atticus Crabtree; a sister Cathy Berry of Galesburg, IL; brothers and sisters in-law, Mark Dietrich (Jane); John Dietrich (Nancy) all of Quincy; and Todd Dietrich (Tammy) of Washington, MO. Nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Connie McDorman and Carle Schmaltz, and a niece Katie Richards.
Private family services are planned. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, Quincy Catholic Charities, or to the Donor’s Choice. Service arrangements are with Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Messages may be shared online at www.dukerandhaugh.com
My condolences and prayers for Brad and the family. Carol was such a good person and I loved her dearly. We reconnected, when David and I moved to Quincy. She was a great support to me when David passed. I will miss our weekly dinners out and phone conversations. Rest in peace my dear sister.
