Carl Joseph Stegeman, Jr.

Carl Joseph Stegeman Jr., age 82, of 3704 Queen Anne, died at Blessing Hospital late in the evening on Friday, December 29th, 2017.

He was born June 16, 1935, in Quincy, Illinois, a son of Carl Joseph and Helen Theresa (Rupp) Stegeman Sr. On December 27, 1958, he married June I. McAllister in St. Francis Church in Quincy. The marriage ended in December 1992.

Carl enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduation from Notre Dame High School, serving in Germany for 37 months, receiving the award for Outstanding Airman of 1956, presented to him by Maj. Gen. Robert M. Lee, commander of NATO’s Fourth Allied Tactical Air Force. Carl attended Quincy College, and then went to work for The American Tobacco Co. in sales. Carl then worked in sales for Gerber Products Co. of Fremont, MI for 38 years. While employed by Gerber, Carl received many sales awards. During the Gerber years when walking into a grocery store with him, one would hear “hey Gerber”.

Carl is survived by his four sons Roderick A. Stegeman and his wife Deanne of Glen Carbon, IL, Mark E. Stegeman and his wife Kim of Hollister, CA, Daniel J. Stegeman of Quincy, IL, and Michael A. Stegeman and his wife Juliette of Coral Springs, FL; two daughters, Cynthia L. Hillebrenner and her husband Bruce of Fowler, IL, and Kathleen M. Fink of Monterey, CA; fifteen grandchildren Andrea Stegeman of Oak Park, MI, Karl Stegeman of Glen Carbon, IL, David Stegeman of Quincy, IL, Ashley, Kristin and John (Jack) Stegeman of Hollister, CA, Jennifer Russell (husband Neil) of Quincy, IL, Garrett Hilllebrenner (wife Ashley) of Quincy, IL, Whitney Valentine (husband Bobby) of Quincy, IL, Lucas, Sophia and Natalie Fink of Monterey, CA, Jeremy Stegeman (wife Sarah) of Quincy, IL, Lynsey Snyder (husband Michael) of Quincy, IL, and Parker Stegeman of Coral Springs, FL; seven great-grandchildren, Hadleigh and Emery Russell, Bennett Valentine, Kaitlyn and Rowan Stegeman, Parker Stegeman and Blake Snyder, all of Quincy, IL; one brother Leo Stegeman of Quincy, IL; one brother-in-law Richard Kohl of Granite City, IL., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Paul, Richard (wife Carlene), Herbert (wife Virginia), Arthur (wife Clara) Stegeman, and his sister Dorothy Kohl.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 9:30 AM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 AM in St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Air Force Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #37 Burial Detail. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Carl J. Stegeman Jr. may be made to: St. Francis Catholic Church (in Quincy), or the Siteman Cancer Center, Saint Louis, MO. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
