Beverley Y. Jansen

Beverley Y. Jansen, age 78, of Quincy, died on Thursday, May 14, 2015 in her home. She was born on January 11, 1937, an only child to Lyndon Potter & Louise (Shears) Potter-Kitchell.

Bev attended grade school and graduated from High School in Palestine, IL. She then obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, IL and continued on to Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO to receive her Masters in Education. She retired from the Quincy Public School System as the Dean of Students. She had previously held positions as the Director of Behavioral Education and Director of the Pregnant Girls program. She had also organized various other programs that were recognized by the State of Illinois and are still in effect today. In her younger years she was a talented seamstress, having made four wedding dresses for brides-to-be by pictures from fashion magazines. Bev was also an avid reader, at times reading three to four books a week. She was also a big Coca-Cola collector. She acquired a large collection of Coca-Cola figurines and owned a complete Coca-Cola city, including three electric trains. Bev never smoked nor imbibed, but was determined to keep the Coca-Cola company in business, even if she had to do so singlehandedly. Beverley was of the Presbyterian Faith.

She is survived by: Her husband Thomas Jansen of Quincy; Three sons: Brian Deckard of Indianapolis, IN; Brett Deckard of Jersey City, NJ, and Bruce (Brandi) Deckard of Plano, TX.
Two grandsons: Justin Deckard and Wade Deckard
One great-grandson: Jaxon Lee Deckard

Other survivors include: two step-daughters: Theresa (Ott) Sonethongkham of Quincy; and Jennifer (Mike) Hudnut of Canton, MO. Five step-grandchildren: Jason (Robin) Sonethongkham, Angela Sonethongkham and Justin Sonethongkham; Alexander Cannady and Joshua Hudnut.
One Step-Great-granddaughter: Macy Sonethongkham.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 1:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers for Beverley’s service will be Marine CPL (ret) Morgan Dever, Marine LCPL Alexander Cannady; Marine LCPL Joseph Slee; Jason Sonethongkham, Joshua Hudnut, & Justin Sonethongkham, Honorary Pallbearer shall be Jeff Hodges. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Adam’s County or to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.

    Dear Tom and family of Bev,
    We are saddened to learn of the passing of an important member of the QHS family. Bev handled many responsibilities with welfare of students at the forefront. We extend our condolences as we honor her importance to education. Best wishes and God’s Blessings.
