Betty L. Pieper

Betty L. Pieper age 87, of 1107 Chestnut St. Quincy, died on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:44 p.m. in Blessing Hospital. Betty was born September 14, 1923 in Quincy, a daughter of Edward and Vallie (Lansing) Sass. She married Merle L. Pieper on July 31, 1943 in Quincy and he survives. Betty was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where she was baptized, confirmed and educated in the elementary school.

Betty was a homemaker, wife and mother. Before her marriage, she was employed by Ely Walker Dry Goods Co. She also was employed part-time by Moorman Manufacturing in the cafeteria. For many years, she volunteered at St. Boniface School, St. Vincent Home and Catholic Charities.

Betty had many interests, including quilting, chair caning, and traveling, especially to Ponchatoula, LA to visit her son Dan and his family and to enjoy the atmosphere and lifestyle of the south.

She is survived by her husband Merle, two daughters, Barbara Ippensen and her husband Kenneth of Payson, IL; Paula Duppong and her husband Kalvin of Quincy; one son Dan Pieper and his wife Terri of Ponchatoula, LA;

Six grandchildren, Brian Ippensen and his wife Penni; Sarah Stock and her husband Robb all of Payson; Kelly Duppong of Springfield, IL; Clinton Duppong and his wife Jill of Palmyra, MO; Rachel Harris and her husband Trey, Ben Pieper and his wife Esmee of Ponchatoula, LA. Great-Grandchildren include Ariann, Adelinn and Ailaa Ippensen; Cameron and Caleb Stock; Tanner and Cayley Duppong; Savannah and Rowen Harris and Isla Pieper. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and all of her eight siblings, Evelyn Eickelschulte, Dorothy Cleve, Edna Rice, Richard Sass, Ruth Schulze, Virginia Kramer, Mildred (Sister Celeste Sass, PHJC) and John “Jack” Sass.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church officiated by Rev. Tom Schaughnessy, O.F.M. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a parish prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to the Ladies of Charity Food Pantry or St. Francis Catholic Church.

    There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of you Grandma, and I always think, your grandmother would not approve of you doing this or that or this is what your grandmother would be proud of!!! I will always do my best to follow your moral standing and live right by all others. I will keep your strong Catholic faith going.
