Barbara R. Holliday

Barbara R. Holliday, age 74, of 1440 N. 10th St., formerly of 809 N. 10th, Quincy, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in Blessing Hospital. She was born on November 20, 1939 in Quincy, a daughter of Clyde & Leota (Douglas) Bowen, Sr.

Barbara was a 1957 graduate of Quincy High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was employed by First Baptist Church and the Unity Church of Quincy as secretary. She also worked at Gardner-Denver.
She was a member of the Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church.

Barbara’s life was singing for God. She had a beautiful voice that she shared joyfully. She was a vocalist with Ben Bumbry & the Messengers for many years. She sang for thirty years at the Illinois Veteran’s Home and for activities at all of the Quincy nursing homes.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Michael Holliday, Jr. of Quincy; Delbert “Tony” Holliday and his wife Rosetta of Jacksonville, FL; Tyrone Holliday of Quincy; six grandchildren, Rico Sterns, Tamara Mayfield both of Quincy, Crystal Mayfield of Kansas City, Dana Evans of Olathe, KS; Donald (Kelly) Evans of Medford, OR; Devin, Delbert, Jr. and Shemar Holliday of Jacksonville, FL; five great-grandchildren, Donovin, Brittin & Braxtin Mayfield of Quincy, Arlandis Willis and Lovie Mayfield, both of Kansas City;

her siblings, Clyde (Pearl) Bowen of Columbia, SC; Henry (Jackie) Bowen of Quincy, Hope Warren of Chicago, Carl (Peggy) Bowen of Chicago, Regina Brent, Laura J. Smith and Larry Brooks, all of Quincy, William Marshall of Chicago, Jackie McGrath of Atlanta, GA and Connie (Les) Fonza of Quincy; many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Orville B. Jones, Jr. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery. There is no prior visitation but family and friends are invited to the services. Memorials may be made to the family.

    I drove Barb to appointments. She was always ” JOY”….I loved her kindness and simplicity…Her singing voice will be part of an everlasting choir…I will miss her on my bus. I wish Peace to her family…

    My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Sis. Holliday was an amazing lady and she had that special smile that brighten my day and any room. She also had the amazing voice that brought tears to my eyes. I will miss her dearly. She is a gift from God.
