Arthur Clarence Freiburg
Arthur Clarence Freiburg, age 95, a resident of the Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy, died at 7:09 a.m., Sunday, September 28, 2014 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on September 16, 1919 in Quincy, a son of John & Helen (Engesser) Freiburg.
Arthur graduated from Quincy College Academy in Quincy, IL. He was employed with Crescent Electric Company and Heintz Electric Company. He served in the United States Army during WWII, December 21, 1942 until January 20, 1946, as a Sergeant in the 239th engineer combat battalion in the South Pacific. He was awarded numerous medals and ribbons including a Bronze Star Medal and Ribbon for meritorious service and three Bronze Stars for campaigns he participated in.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Travelers Protective Association, Catholic War Veterans, VFW and the American Legion.
Art enjoyed working on genealogy, WWII and Civil War history, reading and sports, especially the Cubs baseball games, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by a brother-in-law, Marcellus Deters, 11 nieces and nephews, Margie Thompson of Quincy, Donald (Lynn) Deters of Bowling Green, OH, Theresa (Jack) Meyer of St. Peter’s, MO, Barbara (Ronald) Sibbing of Quincy, Jeanne (Phil) Soebbing of Quincy, David (Lynn) Deters of Quincy, Dianne (Jim) Wyllie of Monte Sereno, CA, Sandra Freiburg of St. Louis, MO, Joan (Chris) Hunt of Champaign, IL, John Freiburg of Quincy and David (Kim) Freiburg of High Ridge, MO; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Paul, Harold “Red” and Jerome Freiburg, a sister, Marcella Deters and a sister-in-law, Rita Freiburg.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #37 and the Illinois National Guard Military Honors Detail. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
