Arthur (Art) Paul Grussenmeyer, age 92, of Sunset Home, late of 514 Holford Drive, died at 12:37 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013, in the home where he had resided for the past 1½ years. Art was born to John and Cora (Ames) Grussenmeyer on May 19, 1921, in Quincy, Illinois. Art was the youngest of six children and attended St. Rose Catholic Church and School. He attended Quincy College Academy. He worked at Niemann Grocery and, while out on deliveries, he caught the eye of Mildred Hermann. They dated for about two years and then Art was called to serve in World War II. Art was away for five years, first serving for six months with the 6th Infantry Illinois Reserve Militia. He then served in the U.S. Army for five years with the 547th Medical Ambulance Company. He served six months detached service with the British Army in India and Iraq. Art then went on to serve in France, Germany and Austria. Two missions Art was particularly proud of were assisting with the liberation and recovery of European citizens from a German Work Camp and assisting with the Lend Lease Supply Chain to Russia. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Platoon Sergeant.

Upon Art’s return from service, he and Milly and were married in St. Mary Catholic Church on August 31, 1946. They had four children and he was a long-time member of the Church of St. Peter. He was also an avid bowler for 45 years, was a St. Louis Cardinals Fan and also enjoyed football. Art was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, V.F.W., Persian Gulf Veterans Association, and the Mart Heinen Club.

Art will be remembered with love by everyone for his sense of humor, his story-telling, his ‘never having met a stranger’ and his great love of travel, history and geneology.

Art is survived by his four children: Ann (James) Palmer of Quincy, Illinois, Sue (James “Monty”) Eaton of Chicago Heights, Illinois, Philip Lee Grussenmeyer (Kathleen Peters Kamphaus) of Springfield, Illinois, and Mary Kay Parn of Lenexa, Kansas. The great joys of Art’s life were his 12 grandchildren: Mark (Melissa) Palmer, Jennifer Palmer, Christopher (Amanda) Palmer, Amy (Joey) Eaton Seymour, Rebecca (Ken) Eaton Lopez, Jamie (Nicola McGoff) Eaton, Philip (Sarah) Grussenmeyer, Paul Grussenmeyer, Joe (Melanie) Grussenmeyer, Aaron Parn, Dominic (Ashley) Parn and Maria Parn. He also had 16 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren.

Art was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Milly, his parents, his brother Melvin, his sisters Dorothy Kaelber, Carlene Murphree, Carriebelle Szeremet, Helene Irick, and daughter-in-law Gemma (Kamphaus) Grussenmeyer.

Services will be a 9:30 a.m. at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home on Monday, December 23, and at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Peter. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, December 22, 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a parish prayer service at 3:30 p.m.
