Alvera Catherine Bockhold
Alvera Catherine Bockhold, age 90, of Sunset Home, formerly of 5234 Columbus Road, Quincy, died at 1:17 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 in the Home. Alvera was born January 6, 1925 at home in Ellington Township, IL a daughter of Ferd & Rosina (Genenbacher ) Steinkamp. She married Sylvester George Bockhold on November 15, 1944 in Quincy’s St. Francis Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on December 13, 2007.
Alvera attended the former St. Michael’s School, and at an early age began working. She had worked for over forty years as a housekeeper for many Quincy families, retiring in 2002. She and her husband were longtime members of the former St. Dominic Church, and later became members of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Alvera was a member of the St. Dominic’s Ladies Society and she was a member of the Third Order of Secular Franciscans. She and Sylvester bowled for many years, and Alvera was known for enjoying talking to and visiting with people.
Survivors include her brothers, Richard Steinkamp , James Steinkamp and his wife Margie all of Quincy; and her sister, Florence Dietrich and her husband Tom , a brother-in-law, Virgil Bockhold all of Fowler, sisters-in-law, Betty Bockhold of Quincy and Mary Ann Chezem of Fairfax, VA. Many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.
Alvera was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles Steinkamp and his wife Rita, and Elmer Steinkamp and his wife Rosetta, and one sister, Mildred “Millie” Bockhold, sisters-in-law, Edna Steinkamp. Frances McGee and her husband Ray, Laurine Bufford and her husband Bill; brothers-in-law, Henry Bockhold and his wife Rita; George Bockhold and Ramon Chezem.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a Secular Franciscan Prayer Service at 5:30 Thursday. Memorials are suggested to: St. Francis Grade School, The Haven at Sunset Home or to Unity Point Hospice.
