Alma M. Olker

Alma M. Olker, age 103, of the St. Vincent Home and the Senior Center, died on Sunday, December 4, 2011 in Blessing Hospital. Alma was born October 5, 1908 in Quincy, a daughter of William H. and Christina (Keck) Niewohner, Sr. She married Raymond Olker on October 19, 1930 in St. Rose Catholic Church and he preceded her in death March 24, 1945.

Alma worked in the office and as Credit Manager at State Street Store beginning in 1924 at age 16 until 1991 when the department store was sold to Kline’s.

She was a graduate of St. Mary Grade School and Gem City College, where as an academic honor she was awarded a Life Long Certificate of Education.

She was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Alma was active with the K of C and St. Vincent’s Home Auxiliary’s, Ladies of Charity, the former St. Mary’s Altar Society, Quincy Deanery and the Western Catholic Union where she was the “oldest living member”.
Alma lived her life in a way that exemplified the love of her faith and her family and her generous spirit. She will be fondly remembered for her delicious Sunday dinners, famous sugar cookies, charming wit and perpetual smile.

Survivors include her two daughters, Shirley A. (Bill) Mendell and Vivian M. (Larry) Wottman;
Grandchildren: Sharon (Louie) Frame; Linda (Terry) Amburn; Amy (Grant) Weidner; Toni (Carl) Mattingly;
and Kris Osborne.
Great-Grandchildren: Courtney, Carissa, Devin, Dustin and Brittany Frame; Ashley (Patrick) Sandoval; Paige Amburn; Cameron and Elizabeth Weidner; Brian (Summer) Ewers, Jon (Kristin) Mattingly; Nic (Rebekka) Mattingly; Rachael (Mark) Maddox and Renee Krapff;
Great-Great Grandchildren: Abigail and Caden Sandoval; Addison and Fletcher Ewers; Alysse and Baby Girl Mattingly (due in May); Mason and Kalon Maddox.

Nieces and nephews: Bruce (Mary) Prindle, Lynn Niewohner, Billy Joe (Jeri) Niewohner; Terry (Barb) Niewohner; Ann (Jim) Ohnemus; Kristin Niewohner Powell; Sandy (Lowell) Potvin; Bob (Erin) Price; Joy (James) Kacena; Penny (William) Sredl; Jerry (Leslie) Price; Brian (Peggy) Price;
a special great-niece, Susanne (William) Murray, Jr. and a son-in-law, Bill (Jean) Lohman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; brothers, William H. Niewohner, Jr. and Virgil Niewohner; Sisters, Leona Price and Rosetta Prindle; a son Ronald Olker and a daughter, Yvonne Lohman and grandaughter, Cathy Lohman.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a 1:30 funeral mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church celebrated by Msgr. Michael Kuse. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a parish prayer service at 7:00.     Vivian, what good care you took of your mother. I’m sure she will be missed, although she is surely at rest. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
