Albert A. “Bud” Bastean

Albert A. “Bud” Bastean, age 86, of Quincy, died on Monday, December 28, 2015 in Blessing Hospital. He was born on April 28, 1929 in Quincy, a son of Joseph & Helen (Treaster) Bastean. He married Patricia Veile on January 10, 1951 in St. Francis Catholic Church. She survives.

Albert was a 1950 graduate of Notre Dame and attended Quincy College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17 and served during WWII as part of the 88th Infantry Division during the Occupation of Italy. He also served as a TRUST (Trieste United States Trooper) in Trieste, Italy. He continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserves 102nd and 85th Divisions retired with the rank of Master Sergeant.

He worked for Art Craft and later retired from JK Creative Printers in Quincy. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Albert was a member of the American Legion Post #37 and Payson VFW Post #2061 with whom he served on the military funeral honors detail. He was a member of the N.R.A. He and Patricia belonged to the Quincy University Water Bugs and the Gem Dandies Square Dance Club for many years.

As his children were growing up, he enjoyed coaching his sons in Little League Baseball. He served as a Boy Scout Troop #22 committeeman. Albert was an active supporter of his daughters in their speed and artistic roller-skating competitions and his grandchildren in their various activities. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and yard work.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by four children, Dale Bastean of Horn Lake, MS, David Bastean and his wife Ranae of Payson, UT, Daniel Bastean of Quincy and Denise Sayeed of Denver, CO; eleven grandchildren, Erin Siebers & Ethan Siebers, Joshua (Kimberly) Bastean & Christopher Bastean, Andrea (Sam) Bellow, Justin (Sara) Close, Jessica Bastean, and Iyesha, Jameel, Shazia & Sohail Sayeed; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Theresa Marshall of Mediapolis, IA; and in-laws Dorothy Bastean, Judy Veile, Mary Lou Stiern and Rita Sparks, all of Quincy and Robert Elledge of CA. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two children, Donna Siebers and Duane Bastean; siblings Raymond, George, Fred & John Bastean, Lizetta McCleery, Ursula Elledge, Doris Fisher & Delores Smith; two sisters-in-law Jeanette Neuman, Virginia Bastean and brothers-in-law Clarence Marshall, Kenneth Veile, Jack Neuman, Gus Stiern & Ronald Sparks.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Payson VFW Post #2061 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, St. Francis Parish Center, Great River Honor Flight or to the Blessing Cancer Center.
