Alan C. “Buzzy” McLaughlin
Alan C. “Buzzy” McLaughlin age 72, of Quincy died on Saturday, September 25, 2021 in the Illinois Veteran’s Home. He was born in Muscatine, IA on June 21, 1949 a son of Russell and Marguerite (Shingledecker) McLaughlin.
He married Shirley Kay Meyer on January 2, 1971 in St. Brigid Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on February 14, 2021. Buzzy was retired from his work in Building Maintenance at Blessing Hospital. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1968-1972. He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church.
Buzzy’s other memberships include American Legion Post 640, the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local and he was a longtime volunteer for the Liberty Fire Department. He had participated in Cursillo and he was an active member of both St. Brigid Catholic Church and St. Francis Church. In his spare time, Buzzy enjoyed fishing, woodworking and singing.
Survivors include his children: Melissa (Terry) Barry of Liberty, Sharon (Phil) Doane of Liberty, Susan (Todd) Siron of Paris, MO and Kelly (William) Sylvester of O’Fallon, IL; grandchildren: Andrew and Talyr Barry, Megan Barry, Eric Doane (Madi Morgan), Craig Doane, Alex Siron, Olivia Sylvester, Ava Sylvester and Evelynn Sylvester.A brother, Ronald and his wife Lucy McLaughlin of Valdosta, GA; a sister,
Diane McLaughlin of Muscatine, IA. Nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his wife, Buzzy was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Marguerite McLaughlin; a brother Robert McLaughlin; a sister, Lois McLaughlin, and his mother and father-in-law, Oscar and Bonnie Meyer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m.in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, Father Steve Arisman officiant.
Interment with military honors in St. Brigid Cemetery, Liberty, IL.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh.

Liberty American Legion Post #640; Liberty Volunteer Fire Department or St. Francis Church.

My deepest condolences to the whole family. He had a big heart. Loved his funny side and I will never forget Buzzy or Shirley. Praying that God wraps his loving arms around you during this time.
As we played and sang or worked as parents at school or church for many years, Buzzy always tried to give 100 percent. He even found the music for his favorite song, “No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus” and we did it at church the next week. We have so many good memories of your parents! Our prayers are with you now and in the days to come.
You all have had such an emotional year. I’m so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. I’m keeping you all in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to have learned of Buzzy’s passing! The years he spent at the Veterans Home will always stay in my heart. When he attended Mass there he would always harmonize to my singing! I will continue to miss that, as I was not able to be at the Vets Home during COVID! At least he and his beloved Shirley are reunited! Prayers for all of you they have left behind!
