Mary Virginia “Giny” Baker
Mary Virginia “Giny” Baker, age 79, of Quincy, died on May 24, 2026, in her home. She was born on July 13, 1946, in Brookfield, MO, the daughter of Eugene and Agnes (Ewald) Gladbach. She married Michael Baker, he survives.
Giny grew up on a farm south of Brookfield, MO, near Mendon, MO, along with 7 brothers and 1 sister. After graduation from Mendon High School she moved to Kansas City, MO to attend Beauty School. In 1969 she met Mike when he joined a Catholic Social Club for single Catholics at Redemptorist Catholic Church. A year later they were married on October 10, 1970. When she became pregnant with their first child Giny asked Mike if she could stay home and be a full-time mother. He agreed. She wore that crown with gentleness and love the remainder of her life. In 1982 they moved to Quincy where they became part of the Quincy Cursillo and was active in Right to Life. Giny soon after joined Birthright as a volunteer for the past 42 years. When the children got older she took up cleaning homes. After Mike joined the Car Medic, she became his secretary before retiring in 2009. She also helped at St. Anthony’s with funeral dinners. Now with her passing we pray she is resting in the arms of our Lord.
In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her children: Brian (Kara) Baker of Damon, TX, Christopher (Fabiana) Baker of Lincolnwood, IL, Karen Cheney of Maywood, MO, Joseph (Melissa) Baker of Leander, TX, Susan (Terry) Spears of Pottsboro, TX.
Grandchildren: Benjamin, Nicholas, Joshua Miller; Root, River, Aspen Cheney; Briana (Jordan), Alyssa, Israel “Trey” De Los Santos; Bailey, Riley, William, and Lucas Baker.
Great-Grandchildren: Olivia Miller and Jabari Evans.
Siblings: Leonard (Lucy) Gladbach, Bill (Aggie) Gladbach, Jim Gladbach, and Robert (Sandy) Gladbach.
She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law Betty and Henry Baker, brothers Denis Gladbach, Tom Gladbach, Lawrence “Shorty“ Gladbach, sister Margaret Gladbach, sisters-in-law Sandra Gladbach and Katherine Baker, and brother-in-law Richard Baker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM in St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment in St. Anthony Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus in the South Entrance. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Ladies Society, Birthright, or Quincy Cursillo. Service arrangements are with the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home.
