Leonard William Kirchner

Leonard William Kirchner, age 98, of Quincy, IL, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died on Thursday, January 1, 2026 in the Illinois Veterans Home. He was born on February 27, 1927, east of Donnellson, IA, the son of Roland and Anna (Hotop) Kirchner. He was united in marriage to Ruth Earlene Shutwell on July 31, 1948 in the Union Church in LaHarpe, Illinois.

Leonard was confirmed as a member of the St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Franklin, Iowa on May 12, 1940. He served in the United States Army in World War II, entering on May 28, 1945, served in Italy, and was discharged on January 21, 1947. Leonard’s places of employment were Wright’s Motor Co., Mid-West Wax Paper Co., Hart’s Trailer Sales, Ft. Madison. Leonard then worked for the City of Ft. Madison in the Cemetery, Street Department and Landfill. In his spare time, he built three homes. He enjoyed country and gospel music. Leonard also enjoyed his antique cars as a hobby. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41 in Keokuk, IA.

Leonard is survived by:
HIS WIFE, Ruth Kirchner of Quincy
HIS DAUGHTER: Joyce Taylor (Charles) of Quincy.
TWO GRANDCHILDREN: Nathan Kirchner and Ceejay Taylor (Lupita).
THREE GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Camila, Kylee and Caison.
Other relatives also survive.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, a son Danny Kirchner and a brother Kenneth Kirchner along with his wife Doris.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the All Faiths Chapel of the Illinois Veterans Home by Chaplain Dave Hall. Interment in Sunset Cemetery of the Illinois Veterans Home with military rites provided by the Illinois Veterans Home Honor Guard and the United States Army Honor Detail. There is no visitation but friends are invited to the graveside services. Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home Activities Fund. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

    So very sorry to hear of Uncle Len’s passing! Unfortunately i wont be able to attend his service, but my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends! May God’s blessings and comfort be upon you as you go through this difficult time.

    I took care of Leonard. We all called him grandpa. He told me once that he was going to have a donkey kick me in my butt. I wish I would’ve known Leonard outside of the ivh. I have not seen Ruth since he passed and I know she is heartbroken. May you R.I.H. Leonard, I know you’ll be waiting for your beautiful Ruth to join you.
