Gregory “Butch” Darnell
Gregory “Butch” Darnell, age 76, of Quincy Healthcare and Senior Living, formerly of 1711 Monroe in Quincy died in the Emergency Department of Blessing Hospital on July 6, 2025. He was born in Quincy on May 26, 1949, a son of Earl F. and Mildred C. (Brinkman) Darnell.
Butch was a 1967 graduate of Christian Brothers High School. He also was a graduate of St. Mary Catholic Grade School. He retired after working many years of installing insulation for Darnell Home Improvement. Butch was of the Catholic faith.
He liked tuning in to Cubs Baseball and following the Cardinal’s losses. Butch enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing. He had a fantastic memory and could tell you when, where, and with what bait he caught the fish. In 1987, Butch was named “Mr. Bass of Missouri” and was featured on the cover of Midwest Bass magazine.
Survivors include his brother Gary P. Darnell and his wife, Carol, of Quincy, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like thank Tina, Tom, and John for the years of care allowing Butch to remain in his home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Tom (Pat) and Mike (Ronnie); his sister Mary (Mike) Tipton; and his nephew, Jim Darnell.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 14, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, July 14, 2025 from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested for the Quincy Notre Dame athletic department or in care of Gary Darnell for the medical expenses of Baby Navy who is facing heart surgery.

We’re so sorry to read about Butch’s passing. We had races for the first tomato 🍅 of the year.
Found out later that Gary was giving Butch tomatoes.
